2019 Theme: Immigration & Migration
Dates: TBD - Summer 2019
Submission Deadline: February 15, 2019
The Alliance Française de Philadelphie presents the first annual “French International Film Festival” a film festival that aims to bring French and Francophone cinema to the city of Philadelphia. The Alliance Francaise de Philadelphie is part of an international network of 884 Alliances Francaises in over 136 countries that promote and celebrate French language and culture. The Alliance Francaise in Philadelphia offers an extensive curriculum of French language courses for students of all ages and levels and hosts numerous events and cultural programs throughout the year. The faculty and staff are delighted to introduce the French International Film Festival as an exciting and innovative addition to the organization’s established cultural programming and its efforts to promote French language and Francophone culture in the city of Philadelphia.
The theme for the 2019 inaugural festival is “Immigration and Migration”. Selected films will be in the French language and will explore immigrant and migrant experiences across the globe. Past, present, and future immigrant and migrant communities bring a diverse and ever-expanding array of cultural, religious, and ethnic identities to their new homes. The cinematic arts provide a unique space for expression and education, where merging visuals and narrative allow filmmakers to bridge gaps, challenge stereotypes, and encourage tolerance through conveyed human experiences. Films selected for the festival will bring attention to the realities of the immigrant and migrant experiences while highlighting the difficulties, triumphs, and resiliencies of these communities.
The festival committee is made up of faculty, staff, and board members of the Alliance Francaise de Philadelphie. The committee will release a “Call for Submissions” in the fall of 2018 to solicit film submissions from directors and production companies to the committee for review. The festival will be held during the summer of 2019 in various venues throughout the city of Philadelphia. The committee plans to host lectures and talks including relevant members of the film community to coincide with film screenings during the festival. All profits acquired from ticket sales will be used to ensure that continuation of the French International Film Festival in the summer of 2020.
