Fairies, Fools, and Witches: The Middle Ages of Laughter and Tears
In this course, we will focus on the marginalized figures of the medieval period: fairies, fools, witches, heretics, and others.
We will explore how definitions of marginality evolved and became established through textual and visual culture. Our journey will begin in
Antiquity with the festival of Saturnalia and continue through to the 17th century with the witch trials and burnings. You are invited to
embark on an exploration of a long and complex Middle Ages.
