Author Joan E. Howard is the director of Petite Plaisance, the former home of Marguerite Yourcenar and Grace Frick- her partner. The later was a literary scholar who introduced Yourcenar's work to English-language readers all over the world thanks to her award-winning translation of the novel Mémoires d'Hadrien in 1954.
Joan E. Howard's book We met in Paris is about Grace Frick and her relationship with Marguerite Yourcenar - a relationship that has often been mirepresented in European-written biographies. We are shown Frick as a person of substance in her own right, and the book paints a portrait of both women that is at once intimate and scrupulously documented. It contains a great deal of new information that will disrupt long-held beliefs about Yourcenar and may even shock some of her scholars and fans.
Joan E. Howard will present We met in Paris at the Alliance Française on Friday, October 19 at 6:00 PM.
